United Beauty gel touch starter kit

I have always been dubious about trying gel nails. I have seen they look incredible and there is no worry about smudging your nails. On the other hand I have heard they ruin your nails and are difficult to remove. I was very intrigued when United Beauty asked if I wanted to try out their gel touch starter kit, which causes no damage to the nail, I had to try it!

As the name suggests, the starter kit comes with everything you need for gel nails. It comes with a LED lamp with charger, the gel touch top coat and 5 cleansing wipes. The kit is really simple to use and I have never had gel nails before!

I thought I would give a quick tutorial of how to use this kit as I thought it would be complicated to use but it is as simple as a few steps. Firstly prepare your nails as usual and select the colour(s) you want to use. Apply a base coat of clear nail varnish I used Revlon's quick dry base coat. Once that has dried, paint your nails as normal, you may want to use 2 coats to give a stronger colour. It is recommended you leave the nails to dry for 20-30 minutes, this is to ensure each layer has dried thoroughly.

Next is to set up the LED lamp, all you need to do is plug it in and switch your plug socket on, a light should start flashing. Use the gel touch nail varnish provided to paint a top coat on your nails, to make the manicure last even longer, try and get the top coat right to the edges, any on your skin can be removed with a cotton bud or a cocktail stick. Next is to put your nails under the lamp and press the button 3 times. This will make the light stay on for 60 seconds, clicking it twice makes the light stay on for 30 seconds and once, 10 seconds. After this you get one of the cleansing wipes provided and rub your nails with it, it will get rid of any sticky residue. That is it! Now you will have shiny nails that could last up to 10 days!

Now you're probably wondering how to remove the gel nail varnish and whether it damaged my nails! There are 2 ways to do this, firstly is lightly dipping it into Acetone or the method I used, peeling it off. I found the best way of doing this was using the nails from my other hand to peel off one of the bottom corners. In some cases it peeled off in one go but a few times it peeled off in 3 pieces. I put on some hand cream and my nails are good to go to be painted again! For those wondering why one of my nails is slightly yellow, as I wrote on twitter a few weeks ago, Barry M stained my nail and nothing will remove it!

Overall I am really impressed with this starter kit, it is easy to use and I am surprised it did not damage my nails. This is great if you want to watch a film and get ready for a night out or if you want a gel manicure for a holiday.  The United Beauty gel touch starter kit will be available in select Debenhams stores and on the United Beauty website in September 2015 and retails at £49.99. What do you think about gel nails?

This gel touch starter kit was kindly sent to me by United Beauty for free but all opinions expressed are my own.

  2. This is so exciting I'd love to try this kit as I'm a huge fan of acrylic nails but I hate the damage they do to my nails!

    1. I have never tried acrylic nails for that reason but this seemed to do nothing to my nails at all! I have painted them twice since and they are as healthy as ever! x

  3. What's the lamp strength? I'm looking at buying the king and was hoping the lamp would be string enough to replace my UV lamp for builder and regular gels. Bex x

    1. It is only described as an "LED lamp" I am unsure if it will be good for regular gels as this is only a top coat, sorry I cannot be more help but there is no strength stated from what I can see! xx

    2. The lamp can cure any gel polish, retail or professional!

  4. Hi as a nail tech, i thought i should share information. If you peel of nail polish the damage is not apparent unless unless you keep repeating the process. As a tiny layer of the nail plate is peeled off each time. Each time will eventually result in thinning nails. The best way to remove this type of polish with minimal damage, minimal absorbtion of toxins, is to lightly buff the top coat, then apply cotton wall soaked in acetone, wrap the nail in foil. As i have not used this system, the use of acetone may be minimal. It is only the top coat which is gel and not the under coats. It should be really quick to remove the top coat and base layers as it is a hybrid system. Hope you do not mind my comments...
